The sculpture formed from a large single piece of burr wood with the body and mane of all 3 lion dogs formed from the natural burr in the timber. The carved faces with painted eyes and the mother bearing bone teeth. To the reverse are lines of Chinese characters part of which translates as the 4th year of Guanxu (1879).
