This Victorian cast brass pocket watch stand dates to approximately 1880. The polished solid English brass item depicts a classical female figure seated on an ornate scrolled support, holding a torch aloft in her right hand and an open book in her left lap, while balancing an intricately decorated circular floral wreath ring above to suspend a timepiece. The sculpture rests upon a rectangular moulded base finished with a low relief pattern. The visible details include sculpted drapery folds across the figure's garments, patterned scrolling work on the base, and decorative ribbonwork atop the floral wreath ring. The stand measures 23 cm high by 15 cm wide and 5 cm deep. Placed on an office desk or within a gentleman's library, the stand offers a decorative display solution for a pocket watch. The reflective polished surface catches ambient light, highlighting the relief cast details of the classical costume and floral motifs. The substantial rectangular base provides a stable foundation on flat surfaces while holding a watch securely within the ring. The piece integrates into traditional interior settings as both a functional accessory and a sculptural decorative object.

Pocket watch holders were designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to display pocket watches on bedside tables, mantels, or desks, transforming personal timepieces into table clocks when not being worn.

Victorian pocket watch holders were commonly crafted from cast brass, bronze, carved wood, or ceramics, often featuring intricate figural motifs created using sand-casting or lost-wax casting techniques.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-finished chasing details, natural wear in high-relief areas, casting seams, and original threaded rod assembly underneath the base rather than modern machine screws.

Style the holder on an office desk, bedside table, or mantelpiece alongside period desk accessories, leather-bound books, or brass objects to create a curated decorative display.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid aggressive polish that strips natural patina, and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax to protect the metal from oxidisation.
