This nineteenth-century Pacific Island folk art sculpture takes the form of a large hand-carved hardwood flying fish finished in a warm brown colour with an old amber varnish patina. The piece displays a curved torso, inlaid eyes, sharp teeth, applied wing-like pectoral fins secured with a brass screw, a notched dorsal fin, and a pointed tail fin, alongside incised facial details. Measuring 58 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 11 cm deep, it possesses an old hook to the reverse. In a contemporary home, this decorative coastal retreat object sits naturally on a mantelpiece or hangs flat against a wall in a living room, hallway, or study. The carved figure brings organic texture to interior spaces, pairing well with nautical or traditional eclectic decor schemes while providing an eye-catching focal point for display surfaces or vertical wall areas.

Pitcairn Island wood carvings were traditionally produced by descendants of the HMS Bounty mutineers and Tahitian companions during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These handcrafted items, often depicting local marine life such as flying fish and sharks, were primarily crafted from native timbers for sale to passing ships.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense, locally sourced hardwoods such as miro wood, shaped with basic hand tools. Details were often embellished with carved elements or brass fixings, and surfaces were polished to highlight the natural timber grain.

Authentic period carvings display subtle manual hand-tool markings, natural surface oxidation, and a developed patina on the timber. Structural features such as hand-shaped fins, incised facial details, or stamped inscriptions often indicate genuine regional craftsmanship.

Position the sculpture as a focal accent on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or bookshelf alongside neutral backdrop elements. Pairing dark wooden carvings with natural textures like linen, slate, or stone creates an understated aesthetic balance.

Dust the item regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, ensuring it remains away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement. Applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax once a year preserves the finish and shields the wood.
