Stunning and very rare 18th century Chinese memorial or funereal tile or panel, c1790 . It is beautifully carved in stone and is decorated with a central figure (possibly an immortal) playing a drum. It has aged well with great colour/patina. There is a large central crack and small loss next to the crack (as shown in the photographs) but this is entirely consistent with its age and use. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinese funerary and memorial tiles were produced during various dynasties, including the Han, Tang, and Qing periods, to decorate tombs, ancestral shrines, and sacred structures. These terracotta panels often feature depictions of deities, guardian figures, or lotus motifs intended to provide protection and spiritual significance.

These tiles were predominantly crafted from dense grey or red clay, pressed into carved wooden moulds or sculpted by hand while damp. After receiving high-relief details, the earthenware was fired in kilns at reduced temperatures to achieve a durable ceramic finish, often remaining unglazed.

Authenticity is evaluated through material composition, firing characteristics, and surface wear. Authentic 18th-century pieces exhibit natural patination, mineral deposits, and subtle variations in relief carving consistent with hand-moulding and historical burial or outdoor exposure.

A relief tile can be placed on a brass display stand on a bookshelf, integrated into a gallery wall, or framed in a shadow box. It functions as a focal architectural accent in contemporary or minimalist rooms.

Clean unglazed terracotta tiles using a soft dry brush to remove dust. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, or damp cloths, as moisture can degrade porous low-fire earthenware and alter historical surface deposits.
