Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George IV giltwood furniture, dating from 1820 to 1830, combines classical Regency proportions with elaborate Rococo revival decorative carvings. Common design elements include sweeping cabriole legs, acanthus leaf relief, shell motifs, and heavy gilding over carved lime or pine frameworks.

These pieces were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso clay, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf. Tops were frequently inlaid with slate, marble, or scagliola to protect the gilded structure from liquid damage.

Original water gilding displays micro-cracking known as craquelure in the underlying gesso layer, along with uneven wear that reveals reddish or grey bole clay underneath. Modern gold paints or oil gilding lack this depth, burnished highlights, and natural oxidisation patterning.

Positioning a carved giltwood stand against neutral walls creates a high-contrast focal point in contemporary spaces. Pairing gold-leaf furniture with matte textures, linear architectural details, or minimalist modern artwork balances ornamental historical detail with clean modern lines.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted using a soft squirrel-hair brush or dry microfibre cloth; water and liquid solvents must be avoided as they dissolve the water-soluble gesso ground. Marble tops should be wiped clean with a damp cloth and sealed to prevent porous staining.
