Antique 'Tubreh' (Storage-bag), Kordi Tribes of Darreh Gaz, Khorasan Province, North-east Persia.

19th century
Description

A rare and stunning small storage-bag or 'tubreh' made by a weaver who belonged to the Kordi tribes of Darreh Gaz in Khorasan Province, north-eastern Persia, circa 1880.

The face is woven in weft-wrapping technique using the most fabulous, glossy, vegetable-dye wool which literally sings, and the back in narrow-coloured bands of plain-weave.

Today, these bags are extremely rare and I was lucky to receive it from a friend in Khorassan very recently, before the Israeli strikes and lockdown of shipping facilities in Iran.

A very collectable bag.

Size: 46cm x 30cm (1' 6" x 1' 0").

Date of Manufacture

Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets has dated this Antique Kordi Tribal Tubreh to the 1880s.

This antique Persian Kordi 'tubreh' storage-bag face comes from the Darreh Gaz region in Khorasan Province, dating from 1880. Constructed from wool and cotton in a weft-wrapping flatweave technique, the textile displays a terracotta red ground decorated with a geometric diamond lattice pattern, latch-hook motifs in navy blue, white, and yellow, and braided rope borders along the vertical edges. Frayed flatweave borders finish the top and bottom edges, while the side cords show minor fraying consistent with tribal textiles of this age. Measuring 46 cm high by 30 cm wide, the rectangular panel works well displayed on a narrow wall space in a hallway, bedroom, or living room. Homeowners can mount the flatweave piece behind glass or hang it directly on the wall as a traditional textile wall hanging to add pattern and texture to interior schemes.

A tubreh is a traditional woven storage bag crafted by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes in Persia. Historically used for transporting grain, possessions, and domestic items, these bags feature woven decorative fronts combined with durable backs.

Traditional Kordi tubrehs are predominantly crafted from hand-spun sheep wool, often built on a wool or cotton foundation. The threads are traditionally coloured using natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool irregularities, natural dye abrash (colour variation), dense flatweave or knotted pile techniques, and specific geometric symbols distinct to tribes such as the Kordi of Khorasan.

These woven panels are commonly framed or mounted as wall-hung textile art, converted into textured accent cushions, or displayed flat on open shelving and console tables.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Clean by vacuuming gently using a brush-free nozzle attachment on low suction, and consult a professional textile conservator for washing or repair.
