This 1930 figurine is an Art Deco bone china character piece entitled 'Babette' with model number HN1424, designed by Leslie Harradine. The ceramic figure depicts a young child standing on a rounded base, wearing a blue ruffled cape and matching blue-and-pink striped swimsuit, with moulded blonde hair. A large, multicoloured floral parasol arches overhead behind the head. The surface is finished in a glossy glaze with hand-painted polychrome decoration in shades of blue, pink, and purple. The figurine stands 12.7 cm high. Positioned on a mantelpiece, this compact piece suits display in a living room, study, or cabinet alongside other ceramics. It integrates well into traditional or period-inspired interiors as a decorative ornament.

Royal Doulton figures produced during the 1930s often reflect the Art Deco aesthetic through stylized human forms, whimsical subject matter, and vibrant underglaze or overglaze paint palettes. Leading designers of the period, such as Leslie Harradine, introduced contemporary fashions, seaside motifs, and theatrical characters into the production line.

These figures are typically slip-cast in fine bone china or earthenware, fired to a hard vitrified state, and then decorated with hand-painted enamel colours and high-gloss translucent glazes.

Authentic pieces feature a printed backstamp on the underside, usually incorporating the Royal Doulton lion, crown, and green printed mark. They also generally display a hand-painted model reference beginning with HN followed by a numerical sequence, occasionally accompanied by impressed dating numbers.

Porcelain figurines function well when displayed on a curated bookshelf, mantelpiece, or within a glass-fronted cabinet alongside vintage hardback books, brass accents, or framed monochrome photography to add historic interest.

Dust regularly using a soft brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking painted figures in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as prolonged moisture exposure can damage older glazes or unstable hand-painted enamel highlights.
