19th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

An oak campaign cellarette

With through dovetails to the corners and recessed brass handles over a plinth base. The hinged lid opens to divisions for 16 bottles, the divisions are removable and below is an additional compartment accessible by a hinged base board. The hinged lid with a brass stay bar, lock and key.

English, circa 1850-1880

The design suggests it was intended for use on the move, or campaign, rather than in the dining room, the recessed handles and its construction in oak make it rather utilitarian, it is of a good scale and will hold many bottles, the folding false base board making space below for an emergency ration.

A campaign cellarette is a portable wooden chest designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to store and transport wine, spirits, and decanters for military officers on the move. They typically feature recessed metal fittings, reinforced corners, and lockable lids to secure contents during travel.

Traditional campaign cellarettes were constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or teak. Construction hallmarks include hand-cut dovetail joinery, flush-fitting brass carrying handles, mortise locks, and internal wooden partitions or lead linings designed to cushion glass bottles.

Authentic campaign pieces feature flush-mounted brass hardware set level with the timber surface to prevent snagging during transport. Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct mortise locks, and natural wear patterns around the base moulding and handles.

A campaign cellarette functions effectively as an accent piece, an occasional side table, or dedicated spirit storage within a living room, dining room, or study. Its compact cubic footprint allows placement beside armchairs, sofas, or within wall alcoves.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the oak grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage, cracking, or movement.
