This nineteenth century or earlier Cornish granite trough belongs to the rustic country style and functions as a garden planter with a weathered grey colour and a rustic farmhouse design vibe. The object consists of heavy stone with a thick stone rim, a hand-chiselled cavity, and a weathered granite surface showing natural weathering and darker soil deposits within the interior basin. The rectangular form displays hand-carved textures across the exterior and interior walls, characteristic of traditional utility items from this period. The piece measures 29.5 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, providing a substantial stone vessel for exterior planting schemes. Gardeners can position this granite trough on patios, terraces, or lawns to hold flowering plants, miniature shrubs, or succulents, bringing architectural interest and historical character to modern outdoor spaces.

Granite troughs were traditionally hand-carved by stonemasons for rural farmsteads, serving as livestock waterers, feed containers, or rainwater catchments. In regions like Cornwall, local granite was utilised due to its exceptional durability and abundance.

These vessels were hollowed out from solid granite blocks using hand chisels and stone-pitching tools. The natural density of coarse-grained granite rendered them virtually indestructible and impervious to water leakage.

Authentic period examples display distinct hand-chiselled tool marks along the inner cavity, irregular hand-worked edges, and natural patination such as moss or lichen accumulation from long-term exposure to outdoor weather.

A stone trough serves as an architectural planter for alpine flora, a focal point in a courtyard, or can be adapted into a recirculating garden water feature or sink.

Granite requires minimal maintenance due to its weather resistance. Clean using clean water and a soft bristle brush to remove debris while preserving natural lichen and aged surface patina.
