Early 19th Century Mahogany Tilt-top Occasional Table

18th century
Description

Early 19th Century Mahogany Tilt-Top Occasional Table

English, circa 1820

An elegant early 19th-century mahogany circular tilt-top occasional table, raised on a finely turned central pedestal terminating in three beautifully shaped cabriole legs with distinctive pad feet.

The circular top displays the attractive warm colour and rich patina of aged mahogany, with subtle signs of wear and use that add to its character and charm.

The well-proportioned pedestal and gracefully swept tripod base give the table a pleasing sense of balance and refinement, typical of English furniture of the late Georgian period.

A charming and versatile antique table, equally suited to use as a lamp table, occasional table or decorative piece in a drawing room, library or bedroom.

Condition: Shows signs of age and use, including surface marks and wear to the finish. The underside has discolouration and wear around the central support and fittings, with evidence of later work. Please refer to the photographs for detail.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Cabriole legs with pointed pad feet: tripod design common from around 1780.
Turned baluster pillar: hand-lathe profile typical of Regency workshop practice.
Battens fixed with single-slot screws: fixing methods used before modern machine screws.
Dark oxidised wood on the unpolished underside: centuries of natural exposure to air.
Smooth handling wear on the tripod feet: long use across generations.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early 19th-century occasional table belongs to the Georgian period and follows an English Country House style. The piece is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown colour and features a circular top, a turned central stem, a hinged tilt mechanism, and a tripod base with shaped legs and pad feet. The timber exhibits a rich patina, visible grain variations, surface marks, and wear to the finish. The table measures 67 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 70 cm deep in practical terms. It works well in a home today placed at the end of a sofa, as a lamp table, or as a decorative piece in a drawing room, library, or bedroom.

A tilt-top table, also known as a snap table, features a circular or oval top attached to a central stem by a hinged mechanism that allows the top to tilt vertically when not in use. Popularised in 18th-century Britain during the Georgian era, these versatile tables were designed for serving tea or wine and could be folded away against room perimeters to clear space.

Early 19th-century tilt-top tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring turned central pillars supported by a tripod base of shaped legs. The tilting function relied on a timber block and a metal spring-latch catch mounted underneath the tabletop.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved components, hand-cut joinery on the central block, and period-correct catch mechanisms on the underside. Original examples display authentic age patination, unevenness on unpolished surfaces beneath the table, and secure hand-turned pillar profiles.

Position the piece as an accent table beside a sofa or reading chair to bring warm timber textures into contemporary settings. Alternatively, tilt the table top vertically against a wall or in a room corner to display its grain character as a decorative vertical element.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the surface finish. Position the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, or fading.
