Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Chateau console table, dating from 1880, stands as a functional piece of hall furniture designed for placement beside the front door. Constructed from dark brown oak and topped with an off-white variegated marble surface, the table incorporates a low rear gallery at the back edge of the slab. The dark wooden frame displays intricate foliate carving along the frieze beneath the top, paired with heavy scrolled front legs that curve outward and rest on low block feet. Vertical supports reinforce the rear structure beneath the stone slab, while moulded wooden detailing frames the upper border of the frieze and the gallery structure. Measuring 86 cm high by 122 cm wide by 58 cm deep, this surface provides a convenient drop zone in an entryway or hallway for keys, post, and decorative items.

FAQs

Console tables from this period frequently incorporate dense hardwoods such as oak or walnut paired with solid marble tops. Design elements often include hand-carved friezes, ornate scrolled legs, and compact proportions suited for grand entryways or reception rooms.

Traditional construction relies on solid oak or walnut frameworks joined with mortise and tenon cabinetmaker joints. Tops were commonly fitted with thick slabs of natural marble, providing a durable surface for display.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carving along the apron and legs, traditional joinery beneath the frame, and natural patina on the wood. The marble underside should show rough hand-cut tool marks rather than perfectly uniform modern machine cuts.

Place the table against a prominent wall in a hallway or entryway to establish a focal point. Contrast the dark, carved woodwork with a contemporary framed mirror or modern wall art mounted directly above the marble surface.

Clean the marble surface using a soft cloth dampened with pH-neutral water, wiping away spills immediately to prevent staining. Dust the oak framework with a microfibre cloth and apply clear beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain.
