Set of Four Chinese Rosewood Nesting Tables with Floral Carving, C1890-1910

19th century
Description

A set of four Chinese rosewood nesting tables, c1890-1910, with carved floral details and a simple, elegant design.

The tables are graduated in size and designed to nest neatly beneath one another when not in use, making them practical as occasional or side tables while also working well within a traditional or contemporary interior.

The rosewood frames are carved with floral decoration, giving the set a distinctly Chinese character without being overly ornate. Their clean proportions and warm timber make them particularly versatile for interior design.

Condition

The set is in great condition, clean, ready to use, and structurally strong and sound.

There is a small historic loss to part of the hanging carved decoration at the rear of the second-largest table. The area has been repaired and is not

particularly noticeable in use, although a small section of the original carving is absent on close inspection.

This set of four Chinese Qing Dynasty nesting tables dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. Made from dark brown rosewood, the tables feature a graduated frame with bamboo-form legs, beaded edges, and pierced floral aprons beneath each rectangular top. The timber displays a rich grain and deep colour throughout the structured design. Practical for everyday use, the set nests together neatly when space is required or spreads out across a room as occasional furniture. Each table stands on slender legs connected by low stretchers, providing a stable platform for display or daily use. The largest table measures 70.5 cm high by 50.3 cm wide and 36 cm deep, with the smaller three scaling down proportionately to fit beneath the main frame. These tables suit placement at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair within a living room, library, or hallway.

Nesting tables from the late Qing Dynasty period typically feature graduated sizes designed to slide beneath one another for compact storage, reflecting traditional Chinese woodworking skills and functional domestic design.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as rosewood or zitan, joining elements with traditional wooden joinery without nails and adorning aprons with hand-carved floral, bamboo, or relief motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved pierced aprons, frame-and-panel construction, bamboo-form structural supports, and natural patina on rich hardwood surfaces rather than modern synthetic finishes.

These tables can be arranged in a stepped tier next to seating, separated across a room as individual side tables, or stored neatly as a single compact unit in an entryway or living room corner.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish occasionally along the wood grain, and keep the set away from direct heat sources or extreme humidity fluctuations.
