Monumental 19th Century French Oak Drapers Table

19th century
Description

A monumental 19th century oak drapers table of exceptional scale, with original paint.

The long planked oak top with moulded edge, raised on a series of architectural open scroll supports, united by a full-length lower shelf.

The base retains its wonderfully worn original paint and untouched surface, contrasting beautifully with the warm natural colour and patination of the oak top.

A particularly impressive and unusual example, combining exceptional scale with strong architectural form and a superb original surface.

We have another slightly larger one (#3777). They both came from the same place in France and were butted together to make a huge, long work table.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This monumental 19th-century French drapers table follows the French Provincial style, constructed from oak with a dark brown finish and original paint on the base. The long, thick planked top features a moulded edge, raised above a full-length lower open shelf supported by architectural scroll and curved bracket elements with mortise and tenon joinery. The timber shows a warm natural colour and patination, contrasting with the worn surface of the base. Measuring H 80 cm x W 380 cm x D 90 cm, this large console and prep table provides extensive surface area for display or functional use in a spacious hallway, kitchen or living space within a rustic farmhouse interior.

FAQs

A drapers table is a long, sturdy wooden workbench originally used in 19th-century textile shops and haberdasheries for measuring and cutting rolls of fabric.

These tables were typically constructed from durable hardwoods such as oak or pine, featuring thick planked tops, mortise and tenon joinery, and lower shelving for storing fabric bolts.

Authentic pieces feature original hand-planed plank tops, signs of historical surface wear from commercial use, traditional pegged joinery, and heavy structural timber framing.

A drapers table functions effectively as a kitchen island, an extra-long hallway console table, or a central sideboard in a large dining space, providing extensive surface and storage area.

Clean the oak surface using a soft cloth, keeping it free of dust, and periodically apply a clear beeswax polish to protect the timber surface and preserve the patinated finish.
