This nineteenth-century Welsh slate door stop exhibits folk art style and pyramidal form. The piece comprises dark grey slate with a stippled background and carved concentric circles, finished with a large, polished brass loop handle attached at the top. The surface displays general usage wear. Additional visual elements include the curved brass ring handle, the textured stippled pattern on the stone faces, and the distinct concentric circle roundels carved into the dark grey slate body. The object measures 23 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. Items of this nature originated as gifts made by quarrymen to supplement their incomes. This door stop fits naturally into a rustic farmhouse interior. Placed beside the front door, it serves a practical purpose while bringing traditional craftsmanship into daily use. The heavy slate construction provides stability, while the brass ring allows for easy movement when required.

During the nineteenth century, slate quarry workers in North and Mid-Wales crafted decorative domestic objects, including doorstops, inkwells, and miniature chests, using leftover quarry slate. These items represent a distinct tradition of British folk art, featuring hand-carved geometric patterns inspired by local craft techniques.

These pieces were crafted primarily from dense grey or blue-grey Welsh slate. They were decorated using hand-chiselling and scribing techniques, and were frequently fitted with brass, bronze, or iron loop handles secured through the top of the stone block to facilitate lifting.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-carved surface irregularities, tool marks, and minor chipping around the base consistent with age. Look for genuine age-related oxidisation on the brass metalwork and a natural surface patina created by historical handling rather than modern lacquers.

A carved slate doorstop serves as a functional object beside heavy internal doors or entryway entrances. It can also be displayed on a low fireplace hearth, deep window ledge, or integrated into a bookshelf arrangement alongside traditional leather-bound volumes.

Clean slate objects using a soft brush or a damp, lint-free cloth without chemical detergents. To maintain the dark tone of the stone, a light application of mineral oil or beeswax can be wiped onto the slate surface, while brass components should be left unpolished to preserve historical patina.
