This Georgian elm candle stand dates to approximately 1780 and operates as a practical adjustment piece for interior settings. The dark brown timber exhibits a rich warm tone across the circular top, central column, and tripod base. A screw adjusting mechanism with a wooden peg allows the height to vary, supported by a boxed section above the turned shaft. Three cabriole legs terminate in plain pad feet, providing a stable footing on the floor. Signs of age appear as scuffs and marks across the wooden surfaces, while the structure remains sound. Measuring 63 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 39 cm deep, the stand fits comfortably into empty corners or beside seating areas in a living room, hallway, or study. The rustic farmhouse aesthetic suits traditional and period interiors, functioning as a display surface for small decorative items, a lamp, or a candle. Daily use requires no complex maintenance beyond routine dusting of the timber surfaces with a dry cloth.

FAQs

Candle stands originated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as portable tables designed specifically to elevate beeswax or tallow candles, directing light where needed before the advent of electricity.

Eighteenth-century candle stands were commonly fashioned from native hardwoods such as elm, oak, or mahogany, utilising hand-turned central pillars, mortise and tenon joints, and tripod bases.

Authentic Georgian pieces often feature hand-carved wooden ratchet or peg adjustment mechanisms, hand-cut joinery beneath the top, and age-consistent wear patterns along the central column.

An antique candle stand functions effectively as a compact side table beside an armchair, a decorative plant stand, or an accent piece in a reading nook.

Maintain elm furniture by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish periodically, while keeping the item clear of direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
