This late 18th-century Venetian Rococo console table is constructed from giltwood, gesso, wood, and paint, presenting a combination of gold and dark brown finishes. The serpentine top is made of polished dark flame mahogany, resting above intricately carved giltwood legs with scroll motifs, acanthus leaf carving, and grotesque mask details. The three-legged design is supported by a shaped verde green faux marble plinth base. Measuring 86 cm high, 116 cm wide, and 54 cm deep, the table provides a substantial statement piece. Positioned beside the front door, the console table suits entryways, hallways, or living rooms as a surface for decorative items such as a decorative urn. The ornate carving and classic Venetian style allow it to coordinate with traditional interiors.

FAQs

Venetian console tables from the 18th century are characterised by ornate Rococo dynamic carving, elaborate scrollwork, and gilded wood surfaces, designed primarily to sit flush against walls in reception rooms.

These pieces typically feature carved softwoods or hardwoods coated with a gesso base, followed by hand-applied leafing. Tops were frequently finished with contrasting polished wood veneers, marble, or painted surfaces.

Authentic period examples display hand-carving irregularities, natural surface oxidisation, red or yellow bole layers showing beneath worn gold leafing, and traditional pegged wood joinery.

Position the table in an entryway or alcove as a focal point, paired with a modern framed mirror above or neutral wall finishes to contrast with the detailed carving.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which can dissolve the gesso substrate and loosen water-gilded surfaces.
