Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Square iron nuts on the central tie rods: traditional 19th-century stone column assembly.
Single-slot screws securing the base rims: pre-20th-century metalwork fixing.
Hand-incised assembly numerals on the underside stone: typical workshop pairing marks.
Mellow oxidisation across the cast brass collars: gradual natural ageing to mounts.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of nineteenth century Victorian columns functions as pedestals or mantelpiece ornaments. Each piece is constructed from cream-coloured onyx with distinctive warm yellow and orange veining, complemented by brass and ormolu mounts. The design comprises a square platform top, an ornate ormolu capital decorated with acanthus leaf motifs, a cylindrical column shaft, a stepped veined base, and a lower brass moulding. The columns stand 28.5 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. Such decorative items suit a gentleman's library or a drawing room interior. They provide a stable elevated surface for displaying small decorative objects on a mantelpiece or a side table. The natural stone shows rich variation in tone across the two matching shafts. Both pieces remain ready for home placement with visible metal collars and tiered square configurations at the top and base.

FAQs

Victorian low column plinths were designed as desktop, mantel, or sideboard displays to elevate smaller items such as portrait busts, small bronzes, or decorative urns within classical revival interiors.

These pedestals were commonly crafted from decorative natural stones such as onyx, alabaster, or marble, accented with cast bronze or brass mounts, known as ormolu, around the capitals and bases.

Authentic period examples feature organic veining and minor surface tonal variations in the stone, accompanied by hand-finished ormolu mounts exhibiting natural oxidisation and aged patina.

Position them symmetrically on a fireplace mantel, console, or bookshelf to create visual height and structure when displaying small sculptures, candles, or curio items.

Dust the stone shafts gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid liquid or acidic cleaning agents. The metal ormolu components should be kept free from harsh chemical polishes to protect the original gilding and aged patina.
