Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Slotted screws fixing the plaque and corner brackets: assembly before cross-head fixings.
Heavy bevelled glass inkwells with circular wells: late Victorian desk furniture.
Natural surface drying along the horn: slow ageing over decades.
Stepped oak plinth showing darkened wax in the recesses: long-settled patination.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian novelty inkstand dates from 1880 in the Victorian style. The piece combines a stepped brown oak plinth base, clear glass ink reservoirs, and silver plated hardware including four cut out corner brackets, bottle lids, pen holders, and a vacant rectangular shield. A curled brown ram horn forms the body of the central creature, finished with realistically modelled silver plated dolphin head and tail mounts. The replated desk accessory measures 34.5 cm in length, 21 cm in width, and 28 cm in height. Placement on an office desk provides a practical writing station with two inkwells. The design suits a study or home office with a Highland hunting lodge aesthetic, holding fountain pens or ink pens between use.

FAQs

During the late 19th century, desk accessories frequently incorporated natural items such as ram horns, hooves, and antlers, combining utility with rustic taxidermy aesthetics popularised by Queen Victorias Balmoral estate.

Victorian inkstands commonly featured dark hardwood bases such as oak or mahogany, electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) fittings, glass ink reservoirs, and natural elements including polished horn or bone.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hallmarks or makers marks on the metal mounts, hand-cut or pressed glass inkwells with clear wear on the bases, and signs of age such as natural horn patina and silver plate oxidisation.

An inkstand can be placed on an executive office desk, library table, or entryway console table as an ornamental centrepiece, pairing well with leather accessories and dark wood furniture.

Clean silver-plated mounts gently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish, taking care to avoid applying chemicals to the horn, which should be dusted using a dry brush and kept away from direct heat sources.
