Georgian Chippendale Period Wine Cooler

18th century
Description

A George III Chippendale period open wine cooler; veneered in well figured Cuban mahogany with canted corners and brass carrying handles to either end, raised on square legs with fretwork corner brackets.

Circa 1760

This antique wine cooler has everything I look for in an antique piece of furniture. It is made from beautifully figured Cuban mahogany which has acquired a wonderful colour and patination through centuries of use. The handles are original and I love the chamfered corners.

This wine cooler could be used for its original purpose but it would make a great planter too It is for sale at our London showrooms and we ship worldwide.

Literature

Old Furniture, Volume V, 1928 pg. 74 A similar example is illustrated in an article by E. F. Strange.

Date of Manufacture

Reindeer Antiques has dated this Chippendale Mahogany Wine Cooler to the Georgian era.

This Georgian Chippendale period open wine cooler is constructed from well-figured Cuban mahogany in a warm brown timber colour with a rich patination and visible surface wear from age. The square body has canted corners, an open top, and original brass drop handles on the sides, supported by four square straight legs joined by pierced fretwork spandrels at the top corners. It stands 42 cm high, 28.5 cm wide, and 25.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this versatile piece serves well as a decorative planter or wine cooler positioned in an empty corner of a dining room, living area, or hallway to add classic English country house character to the space.

Originating in the eighteenth century, a wine cooler or cellarette was designed to hold ice and chill wine bottles in formal dining rooms. Chippendale examples often features square legs, canted corners, and decorative corner spandrels reflecting the cabinetmaking styles of the period.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, chosen for strength and rich figure. The interiors were originally lined with lead or zinc to contain melted ice, while side handles were cast in brass to assist with transport.

Authentic pieces display period-specific construction details such as hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass carrying hardware, and castors on the feet. Fretwork corner spandrels and square chamfered legs are characteristic features of the Chippendale style.

In modern interiors, an antique cellarette functions well as a decorative side table or planter holder. Positioned in an alcove or corner, it provides architectural structure and rich timber tones within both classic and eclectic room schemes.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and colour fading.
