19th Century Chinese Pale Celadon Jade Cicada Carving – Qing Dynasty

19th century
Description

A finely carved Chinese pale celadon jade or nephrite cicada, attributed to the Qing dynasty and dating to the 19th century.

The substantial carving is worked fully in the round, depicting a stylised cicada with elongated overlapping wings sweeping along the body. The wings are individually defined by deeply carved channels, creating considerable depth and giving the piece a particularly sculptural appearance when viewed from the side.

The stone is an attractive pale celadon to greyish-white tone with areas of translucency, subtle natural tonal variation and inclusions.

Cicadas have held important symbolic significance in Chinese culture for more than two thousand years. Associated with rebirth, renewal, longevity and immortality, jade cicadas appeared in ancient Chinese burial traditions and continued to be carved as auspicious ornaments and scholar’s objects throughout later dynasties.

The rounded modelling, polished surfaces and more naturalistically overlapping wings distinguish this later Qing carving from the highly simplified and predominantly flatter cicada forms associated with ancient Han dynasty jades.

Comparable jade cicada carvings are preserved in major museum collections and documented examples of closely related form have been attributed to the 18th and 19th centuries.

This nineteenth-century Chinese Qing dynasty jade carving depicts a stylized cicada shaped from pale celadon to greyish-white nephrite. The three-dimensional object is worked fully in the round with elongated overlapping wings sweeping along the body, defined by deeply carved channels that create considerable depth. The smooth stone displays a polished surface with areas of translucency, subtle natural tonal variation, and visible natural inclusions. Measuring 7 cm wide, the substantial object exemplifies the enduring tradition of Chinese scholar's ornaments associated with rebirth and longevity. Placed upon a bookshelf within a gentleman's library, the carving brings sculptural presence and historical resonance to an interior today. The rounded modelling and detailed wing segments distinguish this piece from flatter ancient examples, offering an engaging tactile and visual element to display alongside books and decorative objects.

In Chinese tradition, dating back to the Han dynasty and continuing through the Qing dynasty, the cicada serves as a symbol of rebirth, immortality, and purity due to its biological life cycle.

Traditional Chinese carvings were predominantly crafted from nephrite jade, valued for its toughness, smooth lustre, and tonal range from pale celadon and mutton fat white to spinach green.

Authentic Qing dynasty jade pieces display subtle hand-finishing marks, soft polished surfaces, natural stone inclusions, and gentle age wear along rounded edges, rather than precise modern drill patterns.

A small carved jade object can be displayed on a custom wooden stand, integrated into a shelf display, or layered alongside books and metalwork on a desk or console table.

Jade should be wiped gently with a soft, lint-free cloth or washed using mild soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers and sudden thermal changes.
