This nineteenth-century processional mannequin from the Victorian and Gothic religious folk art tradition takes the form of a Capipote doll standing on a natural wood slatted timber cage base with a circular wooden floor. The polychrome face, carved with an upward gaze and open mouth, has naturalistic painted features, while the torso is dressed in cream linen fabric with delicate lace-trimmed sleeves, complemented by long dark blue sleeves and carved hands posed in a gesture of devotion. Measuring 53 cm in height, 18 cm in width, and 17 cm in depth, this decorative object makes a striking display piece for a sideboard top in a hallway or study.

Processional mannequins, often termed Santos cage dolls, are wooden or plaster figures created for liturgical displays and religious festivals, designed with open frames to be clad in textiles.

These figures were traditionally crafted using hand-carved wood with polychrome or gesso finishing for the head and hands, paired with lightweight slatted timber cage bases and natural textiles.

Authenticity is indicated by traditional hand-carved joinery on the timber base, surface wear on original polychrome paint, hand-stitched historical fabrics, and natural patination across exposed wood.

Place the figure on a sideboard, console, or within a cabinet of curiosities alongside classic leather books or sculptured objects to create a focal point in contemporary or eclectic rooms.

Maintain a stable room climate away from direct sunlight and dampness, dusting the wooden surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth and brushing delicate textiles carefully without moisture.
