This 19th century Victorian sewing basket or bowl is an octagonal piece made from warm brown rosewood and mixed hardwoods. The object exhibits a curved overhead bentwood swing handle attached with turned wooden side pegs, and features a floral micro-mosaic inlay pattern along the interior side panels. Visible details include smooth bevelled exterior wooden walls, a multi-sided base, and natural timber grain variations. Measuring 17 cm wide by 17 cm high, the basket suits display on a sideboard top in an English country house interior. The vessel holds sewing notions or decorative objects, adding a traditional element to a living space.

Tunbridge ware is a form of decorated woodwork featuring intricate marquetry and mosaic inlays, originating in and around Tunbridge Wells, Kent, during the 18th and 19th centuries. The technique reached peak popularity during the Victorian era, producing small boxes, sewing accessories, and desk items.

Craftsmen used a tessellated mosaic technique by glueing together long, thin strips of variously coloured woods into a patterned block. Slices cut across this block formed identical mosaic sheets, which were applied to base woods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut without the use of artificial dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit tiny geometric or pictorial wooden end-grain tesserae with natural timber tones including holly, yew, sycamore, and plum. Genuine items display fine craftsmanship, original varnish, natural wear to base surfaces, and occasionally maker labels from makers such as Barton or Boyce.

An inlaid wooden basket serves as an accent piece on a sideboard, coffee table, or console table. It functions well as a catch-all bowl for small items or as a decorative display object alongside ceramics and books.

Keep inlaid wooden items away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the wood from warping or veneer lifting. Dust gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid chemical spray polishes, using high-quality beeswax sparingly if required.
