Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency papier-mache tray exhibits a scalloped rim finished in black paint with blue accents and detailed gilded scrollwork framing a hand-painted mountain landscape. The surface shows craquelure and light rubbing to the dark lacquer finish, alongside minor paint loss and craquelure across the central pastoral scene. Measuring 41 cm high and 50 cm wide, the piece sits flat upon surfaces. Display this tray upon a sideboard top or large side table within a living room or dining area to serve drinks or hold decorative objects. It functions effectively as a standalone decorative display item when mounted on a wall stand or placed horizontally within traditional interiors.

FAQs

Produced during the early nineteenth century, these decorative serving vessels were made from compressed paper pulp or laminated paper sheets coated in varnish or lacquer. They typically feature hand-painted pictorial scenes, ornate gilding, and lobed borders characteristic of the English Regency period.

Manufacturers layered paper sheets saturated with paste over shaped moulds, subjected them to high heat and pressure, and saturated them with linseed oil. Once hardened, the dense material was lacquered with asphaltum varnish, polished, and finished with paint and leaf gilding.

Period examples possess heavy, dense construction, hand-applied gold leaf decoration, and detailed hand-painted scenes showing age-appropriate craquelure. They feature rich dark varnish grounds and shaped or scalloped rims rather than the uniform edges of modern reproductions.

Display the tray upright on an easel atop a sideboard or mantelpiece to highlight the painted artwork, or lay it flat on a coffee table or ottoman as a base for small decorative objects.

Keep the tray away from direct heat sources, direct sunlight, and excess humidity to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water immersion, liquid solvents, or abrasive polishes.
