English Oak Refectory Dining Table. Circa 1920–1940.

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Earl and Rymer
Description

A substantial English oak refectory dining table, reputedly sourced from Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire. Circa 1920–1940.

Crafted with traditional joinery, the table features a beautifully aged, scrubbed oak plank top. The natural, pale finish of the top highlights the rich wood grain and authentic wear gathered over decades of daily use. It rests upon a robust oak trestle base, supported by twin upright posts at each end, chamfered sledge feet, and a solid central stretcher rail keyed with through-tenons. This striking table creates an architectural centerpiece perfect for both country house and contemporary interior spaces.

Reportedly originating from Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire, this table belongs to the celebrated tradition of Interwar English oak refectory furniture created for the school. Ampleforth was famously furnished during the 1920s and 30s by Robert "Mouseman" Thompson of Kilburn, whose major commissions established the distinct North Yorkshire Arts & Crafts aesthetic. While this table is not attributable to Thompson, its robust proportion, through-tenon trestle base, and scrubbed oak top reflect that same local craftsmanship and enduring period style.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition with wonderful depth, structural stability, age-appropriate wear, and natural character markings to the top. The top lifts off the base frame for ease of transport and positioning.

Note: Matching solid oak refectory bench from the same provenance available separately.

Date of Manufacture

Earl and Rymer has dated this Oak Refectory Dining Table to the 1930s.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Originating in the Middle Ages for use in monastery dining halls, refectory tables are long, solid wooden dining tables characterised by end trestle legs or corner posts connected by a low central stretcher.

Traditional refectory tables are constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak or elm, employing mortise and tenon joinery, wooden pegs, and heavy stretchers for structural durability.

Twentieth-century revival refectory tables feature solid oak construction, hand-fitted pegged joinery, natural grain texture, and signs of authentic wear along the foot-rest stretchers.

A refectory table pairs effectively with contemporary dining chairs or modern benches, positioned over a neutral wool rug to balance the heavy timber framework.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly, while keeping the wood clear of direct heat sources and standing water.
