This nineteenth-century Victorian textile art piece is a detailed beadwork and wool canvas panel depicting Bolton Castle in Yorkshire within a topographical landscape. The artwork incorporates multicoloured glass beads forming a cloud-filled blue sky, brown mountains, green hills, red-roofed cottages, a dog, a cat, and the inscription 'BOLTON CASTLE YORKS.' alongside the dates 1654 and 1896 rendered in period script. The panel is set within an antique moulded giltwood frame with stepped linear profiles and bright gilt finish. The entire piece measures 36 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. In a modern interior, this wall hanging suits placement above a sideboard in an English Country House setting, study, or living room where it adds historical interest and vibrant texture to a traditional or eclectic interior scheme. It brings warmth and decorative character to a gallery wall arrangement or functions as an individual focal point in a hallway or dining room.

FAQs

Victorian beadwork artwork involved stitching small glass or metallic seed beads onto canvas or linen grounds, frequently combined with woolwork embroidery to depict architectural landscapes, botanical studies, or heraldic emblems.

These panels were primarily constructed using micro-glass beads and woollen yarns worked over a stiff canvas substrate, framed under glass within moulded timber or gilded wood surrounds to protect the delicate beadwork.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-stitched construction on woven natural canvas, irregular hand-blown or drawn glass beads, period-appropriate tonal fading, and original wooden backboards or framing hardware.

Framed needlework and beadwork pictures can be hung as focal accent pieces on neutral gallery walls, incorporated into mixed-media gallery displays, or positioned above console tables to introduce historic detail to contemporary spaces.

Preserve antique textile art by keeping it away from direct sunlight, damp environment conditions, and heat sources. Ensure it is mounted behind UV-filtering protective glass using acid-free matting materials.
