Originating from the 1920s, this original industrial trade sign is fashioned from wood and iron with a painted finish in off-white and black. The rectangular wooden board displays bold, hand-painted block typography spelling out the word garage in shadowed capital letters across the front. The piece shows a heavily distressed, weathered surface with flaking paint and rust spots on both the timber body and the dark metal frame enclosing it. Two sturdy link chains attach to metal loops at the top edges for suspension, showing deep patination from age. Measuring 130 cm in length, this sizeable wall hanging is structurally solid and ready for display. Ideal for placement within an industrial loft or workspace interior, this salvage sign works well mounted on a narrow wall space or positioned freestanding against shelving. The authentic wear makes it suitable for adding character to a hallway, utility room, or living space dominated by utilitarian decor. The combination of distressed wood, faded painted letters, and industrial iron hardware creates an uncompromising vintage statement piece.

FAQs

Commercial trade signs from the 1920s served as primary visual identifiers for businesses such as garages, workshops, and retail shops. Crafted to attract the attention of pedestrians and early motorists, these hand-painted timber and metal signs featured clear, high-contrast typography.

Trade signs from this period were typically constructed using timber boards enclosed within protective iron frames to resist weather damage. Lettering was hand-painted using durable oil-based enamels, with metal eyelets or chains attached for hanging mounting.

Authentic signs demonstrate natural age-related wear, including craquelure in the paint, timber shrinkage, and genuine iron oxidisation. Genuine examples feature hand-painted lettering with natural brush variations rather than modern screen printing.

A vintage commercial sign acts as an architectural focal point when mounted on a feature wall, above a sideboard, or within an entryway. It pairs effectively with exposed brickwork, modern neutral palettes, and industrial metalwork.

Dust the surface lightly using a soft, dry brush to prevent dislodging delicate paint flakes. Preserve the surface patina by keeping the object indoors in a stable climate away from high humidity and direct heat.
