This Georgian occasional table is a late 18th century Sheraton piece made from satinwood with ebony inlay. The design incorporates an oval top with a dark crossbanded border, slender square tapered legs, and fine line stringing, showing a warm golden brown colour and a smooth polished finish. The wood grain displays natural figuring across the top surface, complemented by dark ebonised edging. Measuring 74 cm in height, 53 cm in width, and 41 cm in depth, this compact occasional table fits comfortably at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a sitting room, providing a convenient surface for lamps, drinks, or decorative objects.

FAQs

During the late 18th century, particularly the Sheraton and Hepplewhite eras, satinwood became prominent in Britain for fine cabinet making. Sourced primarily from the West Indies and India, the timber was utilised for its golden tone and shimmering figure, frequently styled into slender Neoclassical accent tables and light furniture.

Tables from this period feature timber frameworks or pine cores faced with cut satinwood veneers, often trimmed with ebonised or mahogany line stringing. Construction relied on traditional mortise and tenon joinery alongside slender square tapered legs.

Authentic Georgian pieces exhibit hand-cut timber joinery, irregular saw marks on underside secondary woods, and organic surface patination. Inlay and crossbanding were applied by hand, resulting in slight geometric irregularities rather than modern machine-cut symmetry.

An occasional table functions as an accent surface positioned alongside an armchair, in an entry hall, or within a reading alcove. Its golden wood grain contrasts against cool neutral wall paints or contemporary textured fabrics.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or timber shrinkage. Dust regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly once per year to preserve the finish.
