This Victorian papier-mâché crumb tray originates from around 1860. The corbeille has a glossy black lacquer finish, a distinct scalloped border, and an integrated upright handle at the top edge. It is richly decorated with polychrome mother-of-pearl and abalone shell inlay, alongside fine gilded scrollwork and linear mouldings. The central scene depicts two traditional Chinese figures amidst garden structures and foliage, framed by repetitive oval patterned cartouches around the scalloped rim. Tiny iridescent chips of shell catch the light in various green and pink tones across the scalloped sections. The object measures 28.75 cm wide by 26.9 cm deep. It works well on a sideboard top or display shelf in a traditional living space.

Papier-mache table items gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century, particularly in Britain. Production centres developed techniques using heat-pressed paper sheets impregnated with linseed oil, creating durable, lightweight vessels decorated with japanning, gilding, and mother-of-pearl ornamentation.

These items were manufactured using compressed paper pulp or laminated paper sheets shaped under heat. Surfaces were treated with dark asphaltum varnish or japanned lacquer, decorated with hand-applied gilding, and inlaid with thin slices of nacre or mother-of-pearl shell.

Authentic period pieces display characteristic signs of age, including fine surface crazing, slight wear to gold leaf gilding, and hand-cut irregular mother-of-pearl pieces. Original nineteenth-century items also possess a distinct weight and smooth, cold tactile feel due to the dense japanning process.

Trays of this style can be displayed upright on a plate stand upon a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf to showcase the central artwork. They also function effectively as decorative catch-all vessels on occasional tables or entry console surfaces.

Dust gently with a clean, dry, soft microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or chemical polishes which can cloud or dissolve historic varnish. Keep the object away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent warping and cracking of the lacquer.
