This George III tilt-top tripod occasional table dates from the eighteenth century. Constructed from mahogany, the piece displays a warm brown timber colour with deep caramel hues, fine grain figuring, and a wax polish finish. The wide solid one-piece circular top tilts vertically on a mechanism supported by a baluster pedestal column with turned collars and splayed cabriole legs ending in pad feet with castors. Signs of age include surface wear and varied grain patterns across the timber surface. A practical addition to an empty corner in a home today, providing a functional surface for display or utility when lowered and space-saving versatility when the top is tilted upright.

A George III tilt-top tripod table is an 18th-century English occasional table characterised by a circular top hinged onto a turned central column supported by three pad-foot or claw-and-ball cabriole legs. Designed during the reign of King George III (17601820), the top mechanism allows the surface to tilt vertically, enabling space-saving storage along room perimeters when not in use for serving tea or displaying objects.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its stability, tight grain, and deep reddish-brown hue. Construction features hand-dovetailed catch blocks, iron or brass release latches, hand-turned central pillars, and hand-cut joinery attaching the tripod legs into a mortise at the base of the column.

Authentic pieces display irregular hand-planing marks beneath the tabletop, original iron or brass snap-latches, and natural wood shrinkage that creates slight oval distortion across the circular top over time. The undersides of the legs should show hand-carved tool marks, authentic wear patterns around the feet, and original wooden or brass catch fittings rather than modern machine screws.

Position the table beside an armchair as an occasional drink stand, or display it with the top tilted vertically against an empty wall to highlight the mahogany grain as a decorative architectural element. Its compact footprint makes it suitable for entrance halls, alcoves, or reading nooks where floor space is limited.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers natural patina. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting, and ensure the tilting mechanism remains free of dust to maintain smooth operation.
