19th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 19th century three tier buffet in carved oak, a handsome and imposing piece of good quality, showcasing fine hand carving and superb craftsmanship throughout.

It is fitted with a single frieze drawer to the top, its front richly carved with trailing oak leaves and acorns around a branch-form handle, above two open tiers ideal for serving, display or storage.

The tiers are supported on boldly turned barley twist columns with carved rosette blocks, and the piece is finished with carved egg and dart and leaf mouldings to the top and plinth base, raised on bun feet. The sides are panelled with carved rosettes to the corners.

The oak displays a lovely grain and a deep, rich colour, with a wonderful patina built up over many years.

Presented in good condition, it is a very desirable and versatile piece of neat proportions, perfect for a dining room, kitchen or hallway, and would make a wonderful addition to any home.

This 19th-century Victorian buffet is a three-tier piece constructed from dark brown oak with a visible grain and a deep patina. The top section contains a single frieze drawer with a branch-form handle, detailed with relief foliage carving of trailing oak leaves and acorns, flanked by rosette accents on the corners. Four boldly turned barley twist columns with carved rosette blocks support the open middle and lower tiers. The structure incorporates egg and dart mouldings along the top edge, leaf mouldings on the plinth base, and bun feet underneath. Measuring 100.5 cm high, 114.5 cm wide and 48 cm deep, the buffet provides storage and display space. Suitable for placement in a dining room, kitchen or hallway, this piece serves as a functional surface for serving or organising everyday items. The open shelving allows for books, tableware or decorative objects to be arranged visibly while maintaining a compact footprint against a wall. The substantial construction and traditional carvings suit period interiors as well as contrasting modern room schemes.

FAQs

A Victorian carved oak buffet is a nineteenth-century dining room storage piece featuring open tier shelves, carved decoration, and solid wood construction typically inspired by Renaissance or Jacobean styles.

These pieces were built using solid oak timber, utilizing mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved friezes, and turned or twisted leg columns to support multiple horizontal shelves.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-carving, original hand-cut joinery, natural age-related timber shrinkage, and uneven wear patterns on structural edges and base feet.

Place the item against a neutral accent wall to highlight the dark wood tones, and style the open tiers with ceramics, glassware, or contemporary art objects.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry cloth, apply beeswax periodically along the grain, and position the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
