This late Victorian taxidermy object showcases a snowy owl specimen mounted under a tall glass cloche dome. The bird displays white feathers with subtle brown markings, perched upon a simulated rockwork mount decorated with moss and lichen details. The polished mahogany base exhibits a rich warm brown colour and stands upon four small turned bun feet. The transparent glass dome protects the feather display while offering a clear view from all angles. The piece measures 72 cm high and 34.5 cm in diameter. This taxidermy display suits placement on a sideboard top within a study or a gentleman's library setting. Collectors of Victorian natural history specimens will find this piece a fitting addition to an interior arrangement focused on historical curiosities.

During the 19th century, natural history and taxidermy became popular interests across Victorian Britain. Glass domes were widely used to display preserved fauna, offering protection from dust, insects, and atmospheric soot while creating decorative focal points for domestic interiors.

Victorian taxidermists utilized hand-blown glass domes, turned mahogany or ebonized wood bases, wire internal armatures, and plaster or papier-mache rockwork adorned with dried lichen and moss to replicate natural habitats.

Authentic pieces generally display subtle air bubbles and slight distortions in the mouth-blown glass dome, age-appropriate patination and wear to the timber plinth, natural fading of plumage, and period mounting techniques using hand-shaped internal wiring.

Taxidermy domes serve as striking focal pieces when placed on a dark wood sideboard, styled within a bookcase, or set as a centerpiece on a mantelpiece in eclectic, traditional, or dark academia interiors.

Keep the specimen away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to prevent feather fading and moisture damage. Clean the exterior glass gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and avoid unsealing the dome to maintain its protective microclimate against pests.
