This imposing Louis XVI style lidded urn and matching column pedestal originate from 1910, following classical French chateau design principles. The ensemble uses richly veined black marble, paired with finely cast gilt-metal mounts in contrasting gold. The baluster-shaped urn features a stepped cover, a pinecone finial, twin scrolling handles with foliate terminals, ribbon-tied floral swags, acanthus mounts, and a shaped marble plinth with gilt mouldings and small ball feet. The separate pedestal consists of a square marble platform, an ornate pierced Corinthian capital, a tall cylindrical column, a moulded gilt collar, and a stepped square base. The combined piece stands 160 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 33 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative display piece works well placed in an empty corner of a hallway, reception room, or dining area to hold floral arrangements or stand alone as a sculptural focal point.

Emerging in the mid-18th century as a reaction against Rococo excess, the Louis XVI style features classical Greco-Roman proportions, straight architectural lines, and refined gilt-metal mounts depicting acanthus leaves, laurel wreaths, and fluted columns.

High-grade quarried marbles, such as Portoro or veined black varieties, were carved for the structural elements, while gilt bronze or cast metal mounts were hand-chased and applied to augment the architectural details.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-chased gilt mounts with detailed chiselling, threaded bolt fixings rather than modern screws, and genuine quarried marble showing natural veining, weight, and cool surface temperatures.

Position the pedestal in a grand hallway entrance, framed by architectural wall panels, or place it within an empty corner to add vertical structure and historical contrast to contemporary living spaces.

Dust marble surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth, remove liquid spills immediately with pH-neutral water to prevent acid etching, and avoid abrasive polishes or harsh chemical cleaners on gilded metalwork.
