Unusual Regency Mahogany Tea Table

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality 19th Century, Regency Period Mahogany Tea Table, Having Superbly Figured Foldover Top With Banded Decoration And Well Figured Interior Retaining Good Surface And Patina, Above Elegantly Figured Frieze With Matchstick Fluted Decoration, Raised On Rare Extravagant Turned Sabre Legs With Carved Scrolling Decoration To Feet.

As suggested by the name, tea tables were made to serve tea from. Often part of a pair, with an identical matching card table, or even a wider suite of furniture they would simply stand to one side in a room and be pulled out, then opened up when required to allow for the placement of trays containing all that is required to serve tea from.

Now of course aside from its original purpose this table suits a whole variety of different spaces around the home. It could be used as a console table, a pier table, a simple side table or even as a card games table.

Constructed from well figured, high grade mahogany which would have been expensive to purchase in the late 18th century it is incredibly elegant and very good quality. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into the overall look of the table and the cabinet making has been well executed.

The legs are quite spectacular, a design which we have actually never come across before. They are certainly something very special and, dare we say it, possibly even a unique feature, which will no doubt be a talking point once the table is standing proudly in position.

As with all items which we offer for sale it has been through our workshops, where our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers have inspected it and given it a natural wax polish, ensuring that it is ready to be placed straight into the home.

This 18th century Grand Regency tea table displays warm brown mahogany timber with visible grain figures, a fold-over top featuring banded decoration, and a flame mahogany frieze accented by vertical matchstick fluted mouldings on the corner blocks. The structure rests on four curved sabre legs incorporating ring-turned details and carved scrolling decoration to the feet, showing a waxed finish across all wooden surfaces. Measuring 74 cm high, 92 cm wide and 46 cm deep, the table fits into narrow wall spaces as a console, pier table, side table or card games table in a modern hallway, drawing room or dining area.

A Regency tea table is a piece of English furniture produced during the Regency era, typically between 1811 and 1830. Designed with a folding top that swivels or opens, it served as a surface for social tea service or card playing and doubled as a decorative wall table when closed.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency period primarily utilised high-grade imported timbers such as solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers. Internal framing and drawer linings often featured pine or oak, fitted with solid brass hinges and iron stay mechanisms.

Authentic Regency tea tables feature period-accurate joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails, brass butterfly or butt hinges, and natural patination on untooled timber undersides. Design characteristics often include reeded mouldings, sabre or curved legs, and flame mahogany timber veneers.

Position the table against a wall in an entryway, hallway, or behind a sofa to function as a compact console table. Top it with balanced decorative accessories, such as ceramic lamps or framed artwork, ensuring the wood grain remains visible.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the patina. Position the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent shrinkage, cracking, or fading of the veneer.
