This late George III mahogany snap-top pedestal dining table dates from around 1800. Constructed with a solid mahogany top in a rich dark brown tone, it stands on a turned central pedestal column supported by four graceful sweeping legs fitted with original brass castors and brass toe caps. The piece exhibits surface marks on the top and a historic repair to the shaft, while remaining structurally sound and solid throughout. Measuring 71 cm high by 107 cm wide by 82 cm deep, the table provides flexible dining arrangements due to its pedestal base. In a modern interior, this versatile antique functions as a dining table for smaller spaces, a breakfast table, or a central library display piece. The pivoting top mechanism allows the table to be folded down for compact storage against a wall when not in use. Placed in a kitchen, dining room or living space, the classic George III styling complements both traditional and contemporary room schemes while offering practical everyday utility.

A snap-top or tilt-top pedestal table features a hinged mechanism allowing the tabletop to pivot vertically against a central turned column, a functional design popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries to maximize floor space when not in use.

Tables from this period were typically constructed using dense mahogany for the top and stem, with steel catch mechanisms and cast brass toe caps and castors on the splayed legs.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetails on the underside block, period brass catch releases, hand-turned pedestals, and natural age-related wear or hand-planing marks on the timber underside.

A Georgian pedestal table functions as a compact four-seater dining table, a central foyer focal point, or can be stored with the top tilted vertically against a wall to showcase the mahogany grain as a decorative architectural feature.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to avoid timber shrinkage or surface fading. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional light applications of beeswax will protect the patinated surface.
