Victorian Mahogany Table with Single Fall

19th century
Description

A late Victorian mahogany table with a single fall, standing on ring-turned legs with ball castors. The fall is supported by two lopers which extend from the table carcass.

Removed from a dining setting, although the proportions would also lend themselves well to use as a console table.

Condition Report

In excellent antique condition. The table has had a number of minor more recent repairs, evident from the underside, but is altogether very solid. There are some very faint marks to the top.

The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.

If you have any questions regarding this piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A single fall drop-leaf table features a single hinged leaf attached to one side of the top surface, allowing the tabletop to expand when raised or sit flush against a wall when folded down.

Victorian drop-leaf tables were crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, utilizing brass rule joints on the hinges and turned timber legs often fitted with brass or ceramic castors.

Authentic Victorian drop-leaf tables exhibit hand-turned legs, period-correct joinery, original metal or ceramic castors, and historic patination along the timber underside and leaf joints.

Position the table with the leaf folded down against a wall as a narrow hallway console, or place it behind a sofa dressed with contemporary lighting and decorative ceramics.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent warping.
