Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

This large scale Japanese Meiji period porcelain charger dates from circa 1890 and is decorated in rich cobalt blue, iron red, and applied gold leaf. The hand-painted plate features panels with a foliate design, exotic phoenix birds among flowers, swimming goldfish roundels, floral scrolls, and lattice borders. The back includes a simple blue design and a central signature, and the piece comes with its original handmade wire wall hanging frame. The charger has wear to the gilt rim and measures 47 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. In a home today, this decorative charger suits display on a sideboard top or mounted on a wall using its wire frame, fitting naturally into an English Country House interior scheme. Its detailed patterns and metallic accents bring traditional Japanese craftsmanship to a dining room, hallway, or living space.

Meiji period porcelain chargers were crafted in Japan between 1868 and 1912, frequently produced for export to Western markets with elaborate hand-painted decoration reflecting traditional Japanese motifs and craftsmanship.

These items were formed from refined kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures, incorporating underglaze cobalt blue followed by overglaze polychrome enamels and gilded accenting before undergoing secondary firings.

Authentic examples generally feature asymmetrical or segmented panelled layouts, deep underglaze cobalt blues paired with iron-red enamels, hand-applied gilding, and fine potting variations around the unglazed foot rim.

An antique charger can be styled on an acrylic or brass plate stand atop a console table or sideboard, or mounted securely as part of a gallery wall to introduce historical detail and pattern.

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth and lukewarm water with mild liquid detergent, avoiding abrasive materials, harsh chemicals, or prolonged immersion that might degrade delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
