This Victorian Staffordshire earthenware figure depicts Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, dressed as a sailor. Dating from circa 1860, the piece portrays the young royal wearing an off-white sailor uniform with a bright orange neckerchief and a straw-coloured hat, standing upon a green and brown moulded base with polychrome details. The glazed ceramic construction displays fine moulded linear patterns on the shirt, a dark belt with a buckle, and hand-painted facial features with brown hair. One anchor hook is missing, and there are minor grazes to the surface, accompanied by no restoration. Standing 31 cm high, this collectable figurine is well suited for display on a mantelpiece within an English country house interior.

Staffordshire figures are earthenware decorative ceramics manufactured in the Staffordshire pottery district of England primarily during the 19th century. They frequently depict historical personages, royalty, military figures, or everyday genre scenes popular during the Victorian era.

These ornaments were press-moulded from earthenware clay, fired, and finished with clear glazes alongside hand-painted enamel decoration. Many mid-to-late 19th-century figures feature simplified flat backs designed specifically for display against walls or on mantelpieces.

Authentic period examples typically exhibit press-moulding seams, unglazed bases with small air release holes, and light crazing across the glaze. Most pieces were produced by uncredited potteries and therefore lack factory backstamps or maker marks.

Position the figurine on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table as a focal decorative accent. Displaying traditional glazed ceramics against modern painted surfaces or natural timber creates balanced visual interest in contemporary schemes.

Dust the ceramic surface gently using a soft, dry brush or clean microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing porous earthenware in water or using abrasive liquid detergents, which can penetrate glaze crazing and damage original paintwork.
