This is a Victorian orangery glasshouse table, dating to circa 1870. The console table combines a rectangular mahogany top with warm caramel hues and fine grain interest with a substantial cast iron frame in a white and distressed painted finish. The top is accentuated with foliate brass medallions, while the frame features striking scroll and foliate motifs on the fretwork side stands and an arched stretcher united by a decorative knop moulding in the centre. The iron legs terminate in scrolled feet, and the entire structure displays a weathered patina reflecting its age. The table measures 74 cm high, 107.5 cm wide, and 55 cm deep. Well-suited for everyday use in a sunlit conservatory, bay window, or summerhouse, this surface functions practically as a display table for garden produce or as a small tea and drinks table. The proportions allow it to sit comfortably against a wall or in a window recess while providing a wide top for functional placement of items. The robust materials and solid construction ensure it remains stable for regular home use, while the decorative ironwork provides a strong visual anchor for botanical displays.

During the 19th century, advancements in iron founding enabled the production of highly ornate cast iron furniture for glasshouses, conservatories, and gardens. These tables were designed to withstand humid glasshouse environments while supporting plant displays and garden paraphernalia.

These pieces featured heavy cast iron bases, frequently finished with paint to retard rust, paired with durable timber tops such as polished mahogany or teak, or stone surfaces suited to damp conservatory conditions.

Authentic Victorian examples feature detailed casting crispness, elaborate scrollwork or foliage motifs, substantial visual and physical weight, and layered historical paint finishes showing natural age and mild oxidisation.

Position the table in a sunroom, hallway, or alcove as a side table or console, pairing the textural, aged iron frame with potted foliage, stone pottery, or framed botanical illustrations.

Dust the timber surface regularly and apply natural wax polish periodically. Preserve the cast iron base by keeping it dry, cleaning gently with a soft brush, and applying clear microcrystalline wax to protect the distressed paintwork from flaking.
