Antique 19th Century Oak Pembroke Table | Sabre Legs

19th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 19th century Pembroke table in oak, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and the graceful lines of the late Regency period.

The rectangular top has two hinged drop leaves with rounded corners, so it can be kept compact against a wall or opened out as a small breakfast, games or occasional dining table. A frieze drawer to the end is fitted with a pair of turned wooden knob handles and a brass-lined keyhole.

The top rests on a boldly turned baluster column above a shaped platform, raised on four elegant sweeping sabre legs that finish on turned feet, giving the table a light and very stable stance.

The oak displays a lovely figured grain with attractive medullary rays across the top and leaves, and a warm, mellow colour with a rich, darker patina to the base.

A versatile and practical size for smaller rooms, presented in good antique condition. A very desirable table and a perfect addition to any home.

This nineteenth-century Regency Pembroke table is constructed from solid oak with a warm brown finish, displaying a figured grain, visible medullary rays, and a darker patina across the base. The rectangular top incorporates two hinged drop-down leaves with rounded corners, supported by a central turned baluster column and four splayed sabre legs terminating in turned feet. A single frieze drawer is fitted at one end with two small turned wooden knobs and a brass-lined keyhole. The table measures 72 cm high, 96.5 cm wide, and 53 cm deep when closed, extending to 101 cm deep. It serves as a practical occasional, breakfast, or games table in a living room, dining room, or study, and can be positioned compactly against a wall.

First introduced in the 18th century, a Pembroke table is a compact drop-leaf table featuring two hinged leaves that raise to extend the top surface, usually supported by wooden fly brackets and fitted with a single frieze drawer.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, incorporating traditional joinery including hand-cut dovetails, turned wooden drawer knobs, and splayed sabre legs on a central pedestal stem.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-planed timber undersides, original hinge mechanisms, historical wear along the foot projections, and hand-cut dovetail joints within the single frieze drawer.

A Pembroke table serves as a flexible occasional side table, a hallway console, or a compact desk, offering functional surface space when unfolded while maintaining a minimal footprint when closed.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly using a dry microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the original finish, keeping the piece away from direct radiators or moist air.
