I have to say i cant imagine much is manufactured in W1 now. A lovely table raised on turned legs and the top and lower shelf are attached by breathing blocks so they wont split. When this piece was made we ruled more than a 1/3 of the Planet, Our Navy was something to behold and be wary of, Goods and Products flowed from every corner of the planet to us. Our passport was blue as it will be again and we were proud to say we were British.

This Arts & Crafts side table dates from the period between 1890 and 1910, constructed from oak with a warm brown timber finish. The piece takes a two-tier design with a rectangular top and an open lower shelf, both attached by breathing blocks to prevent splitting. Four slender turned wooden legs support the structure, elevating the lower tier above the ground. The table measures 76 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. Placement suits various interior spaces throughout a home, functioning effectively as a side table or as a display surface in a hallway beside the front door. The English Country House style coordinates easily with traditional and period furnishings, providing a practical surface for everyday use while maintaining a period aesthetic.

The Arts and Crafts movement developed in the late nineteenth century as a reaction against mass industrialisation, focusing on structural simplicity, visible joinery, and the natural grain of timbers like oak.

Tables from this period were typically constructed using solid English or European oak, often incorporating turned wood legs, mortise and tenon joints, and solid wood lower tiers for additional stability.

Authentic pieces from circa 1890 to 1910 display characteristic hand-finished joinery, natural age-related patina, quarter-sawn oak medullary rays, and period-appropriate construction methods on the underside.

Place the piece in an entryway or living space to contrast structured antique woodwork with modern ceramic vessels, abstract artwork, or neutral linen soft furnishings.

Apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the direction of the wood grain, keep the surface dry, and place the table away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
