This nineteenth-century Gothic Revival panel consists of solid dark oak with a dark brown finish and deep relief carvings. The piece displays a stylised Green Man mask at the top with prominent foliate flourishes, scrolling eyebrow motifs, and a tapering shaft that terminates in a carved lion's paw base featuring distinct toe details and round central buttons. Structural preservation is sound, alongside visible age signs including old minor woodworm traces that are treated and inactive, plus natural timber weathering. Dimensions measure 41.5 cm high, 15.5 cm wide, and 7 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative appliqué suits placement on a mantelpiece.

The Green Man is a traditional architectural motif depicting a human face composed of or surrounded by foliage, frequently used in woodcarving from medieval times through the Gothic Revival era.

Nineteenth-century decorative carvings were predominantly hand-cut from dense European hardwoods, particularly oak, which allowed deep relief detail and long-term durability.

Authentic period carvings exhibit hand-chiseled tool marks, subtle variations in surface symmetry, natural timber shrinkage along the grain, and aged patination within deep recesses.

A carved oak element can be styled as standalone wall art, displayed on a shelf or mantelpiece, or integrated as a decorative feature in modern fitted joinery.

Dust regularly using a dry soft-bristled brush to reach carved recesses, and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to preserve the timber and retain its surface lustre.
