This pair of early eighteenth-century Japanese Arita porcelain jars and covers originates from the Edo period and measures 41.5 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 30.5 cm deep. The items display a baluster profile with domed lids surmounted by pointed finials, finished in a glossy white glaze overlaid with cobalt blue panel borders, rust red accents, and delicate gilding. Intricate chrysanthemum floral motifs and detailed botanical branches unfold across the glazed surfaces in vibrant red and blue hues. The matching covers repeat the floral theme with smaller scale patterns beneath the finials, while thick blue vertical bands segment the bodies. Both jars sit on flat, unadorned circular bases and remain in very good unrestored condition. Suitable for an English Country House interior scheme, these decorative lidded jars bring traditional craftsmanship into modern living spaces. They fit well placed together on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table in a living room, dining room, or hallway to add historical character and rich colour to the room. The polished porcelain reflects ambient light, making them effective focal points when styled on wooden furniture.

Produced in and around the town of Arita in Hizen province, Arita porcelain represents historic Japanese ceramic ware originating in the seventeenth century, renowned for underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze polychrome enamel decoration.

These vessels were formed from crushed porcelain stone, decorated with cobalt blue underglaze, high-fired, and subsequently decorated with hand-painted iron-red enamels, gilding, and coloured glazes before a second firing.

Authentic period pieces often feature spur marks on the base, slight irregularities in the hand-painted brushwork, natural wear to gold leaf and enamel layers, and specific period shape profiles.

Positioning these vessels symmetrically on a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard introduces contrast, rich historical character, and structure to both traditional and contemporary rooms.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or soft brush. Avoid liquid immersion, harsh detergent, and abrasive materials that can damage delicate surface enamels and gilded decoration.
