These 19th-century Victorian decorative vessels are a matched pair of Villeroy & Boch stoneware ewers in the pilgrim flask shape, dating from 1880. Each ewer has a circular disc-shaped body raised on an elevated pedestal base, topped by a slender neck with a shaped handle to the back and a glazed finish. The ceramics display detailed moulded relief decoration incorporating blue, cream, ochre, brown, and green starburst medallions, along with geometric patterns and repetitive motifs across the body, neck, and base. The pieces measure 35 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this pair suits display upon a sideboard top as striking decorative vessels. The striking combination of colours and intricate relief work makes them suitable additions to period-inspired or eclectic interiors, adding visual interest to a surface display.

Nineteenth-century German stoneware ewers are characterized by dense, vitreous ceramic bodies, often decorated with moulded relief patterns, historical revival motifs, and salt or lead glazes in deep earthy tones, blues, and creams.

Villeroy & Boch produced ewers primarily using stoneware or earthenware, coloured with oxide glazes and highlighted with enamels or impressed relief work prior to firing at high temperatures.

Authentic pieces usually feature impressed maker marks on the base, such as the company name, factory location marks like Mettlach, numerical shape codes, and distinct mold registration numbers.

Ceramic ewers can be displayed as standalone decorative objects on a sideboard, styled symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, or arranged in a curated bookshelf collection alongside books and textured glass.

Preserve antique stoneware by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and washing gently with lukewarm water and mild dish soap when required, avoiding chemical detergents, abrasive scrubbers, or immersion.
