Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French Country farmhouse dining table comes from the rustic tradition and is fashioned from oak with a warm brown finish. The rectangular planked top sits above a frieze fitted with a single central drawer containing a round wooden knob. Four square tapered legs support the frame, displaying visible pegged joinery and natural surface wear consistent with age and use. The timber exhibits varied grain patterns and darker staining across its aged surface. Standing 75 cm high, 147 cm in length, and 79 cm in depth, this piece has compact proportions suitable for smaller spaces. In a contemporary home, this table functions as a practical kitchen dining surface or a compact writing desk. It integrates naturally into rustic farmhouse interiors, combining traditional woodworking details with everyday utility. The warm wood tones and understated profile complement both traditional and eclectic dining spaces, providing an authentic antique character for daily use.

FAQs

French farmhouse dining tables originated as functional utilitarian pieces crafted for rural European households. Characterised by straight lines, planked tops, and often side frieze drawers, they served as both food preparation and communal dining surfaces.

These tables were typically constructed from locally sourced hardwoods, predominantly oak, chestnut, or walnut. Joinery techniques relied on traditional mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs rather than metal fasteners.

Authentic period examples exhibit irregular wear patterns on the stretchers or legs, visible hand-planing marks across the top, and natural shrinkage around wooden pegged joints. Original frieze drawers often show hand-dovetailed or nailed construction with historic wear on the runners.

To integrate a traditional oak table into contemporary spaces, pair the warm timber tone with modern upholstered or metal dining chairs. Neutral linen table runners and simple ceramic accents enhance the natural grain without cluttering the surface.

Maintain solid oak by applying a high-quality clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve moisture in the timber. Clean spills immediately with a soft damp cloth, and keep the piece away from direct radiator heat to avoid wood movement or cracking.
