Antique Early 18th Century Quality Oak Box Coffer in the Form of a Miniature Chest

18th century
Description

A charming early Queen Anne period oak box coffer dating from circa 1710 constructed in the form of a small three-drawer chest. This compact coffer opens from the top, the hinged lid lifting to reveal a deep lead-lined interior.

Crafted from beautifully patinated early oak, the piece displays a wonderfully matured surface and warm colour built over more than 300 years. The front is styled with three faux drawer fronts each with early ring-pull brass handles and centred by an attractive pierced brass escutcheon. Original side-carry handles remain in place and the coffer stands on shaped bracket feet typical of early 18th-century furniture.

Its small scale and disguised form make this an exceptional piece suitable today as a decorative accent table, storage piece, or collector’s item with strong early character.

Good early condition with expected age-related surface wear and historic patination.

This early 18th-century oak box coffer dates from circa 1710 and is styled in the form of a miniature chest of drawers. The piece exhibits a warm brown colour and a matured timber surface built over centuries of age-related wear, displaying three faux drawer fronts fitted with ring drop brass handles and a pierced brass escutcheon. It stands on shaped bracket feet and features a hinged top lid that opens to reveal a deep interior. Measuring 47 cm high, 43.5 cm wide, and 35 cm deep, the coffer provides a compact profile well-suited for placement on a sideboard top or as a distinctive decorative accent table in a living room, hallway, or study today.

Miniature chests and box coffers were crafted during the 17th and 18th centuries either as apprentice pieces to demonstrate cabinetmaking skill or as specialised tabletop storage boxes. Designed to resemble full-sized chests of drawers, these items frequently feature lift-up lids or faux fronts for securing small valuables.

Early 18th-century coffers were predominantly constructed from solid English oak utilizing traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints or hand-cut dovetails. Hardware typically included hand-hammered brass drop handles, pierced brass escutcheons, and iron hinges.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display signs of hand-planed timber, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, original brassware with natural patination, and age-appropriate wear around handling points. The timber usually exhibits rich oxidisation and historic shrinkage marks consistent with natural ageing.

An antique oak coffer functions effectively as a decorative tabletop piece on a sideboard, console table, or deep window sill. It creates organic warmth and visual contrast when set against clean contemporary architectural lines, neutral walls, or modern stone backdrops.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the protective patination. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent timber movement or warping.
