This pair of Victorian Staffordshire ceramic figures depicts seated greyhounds modelled in an earthenware body with a glossy white and light brown enamel glaze and gilded collar details. Each animal is posed upright with alert expressions upon an oval mound base finished with a gilded band and green shredded clay vegetation accents. Dating from 1860, the ornaments measure 21 cm high, 7 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. These traditional English country house figurines suit display on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table within a sitting room or study. They integrate easily into traditional or eclectic interior schemes as decorative mantel ornaments.

Staffordshire figures are earthenware ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, predominantly during the 19th century. Greyhound and whippet figures became popular decorative items during the Victorian era, often depicted seated or standing with prey such as hares at their feet.

These figures were press-moulded from earthenware clay, fired, and painted by hand using overglaze enamel paints. Details such as gilded collars, textured fur, and shredded clay vegetation were applied prior to a final glaze firing.

Authentic 19th-century pieces usually feature a hollow interior, small air-release holes on the reverse or base, and slight paint loss on overglaze enamels. They typically lack makers marks and exhibit gentle crazing within the lead glaze.

Display ceramic hound figures in symmetrical pairs on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side console table. Combining traditional Victorian earthenware with clean contemporary surfaces creates a curated, heritage aesthetic.

Dust the ceramics regularly using a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush. Avoid immersing porous earthenware in water or using harsh chemical cleansers, as liquid can penetrate glaze cracks and damage hand-painted overglaze enamels.
