Antique Victorian Oak Extending Dining Table Winding Mechanism C.1890

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A beautiful and highly practical Victorian oak extending dining table, dating from approximately 1880–1900, featuring a traditional winding extension mechanism.

The table is beautifully constructed with a substantial rectangular oak top displaying an attractive natural grain and warm aged colour. The moulded edge with clipped corners gives the tabletop a particularly elegant finish, while four finely turned legs provide the classic proportions associated with late Victorian dining furniture.

One of the most desirable features is the traditional winding extension mechanism, operated from the end of the table using the winding handle.

When closed, the table measures approximately 124 cm in length, making it suitable for everyday dining without dominating a room. When required, it extends to approximately 179 cm, providing considerably more dining space for family gatherings and entertaining.

Width / Length Extended: 179 cm

Presented in very good antique condition for its age, with minor marks, scratches, variations in colour and other signs of previous use consistent with a genuine piece of late 19th-century furniture. The extension mechanism is an important original feature of the table.

This Victorian oak extending dining table dates from approximately 1880–1900 and displays a warm brown natural wood grain with minor marks and scratches consistent with late 19th-century use. The substantial rectangular top has a moulded edge with clipped corners, supported by four finely turned wooden legs and an integrated metal winding handle mechanism at the end. The construction uses oak along with iron and brass components. The piece measures 75 cm high by 124 cm wide and 105 cm deep, extending to 179 cm in length for family gatherings. It suits daily family dining in a kitchen or dining room within an English country house setting.

Victorian extending dining tables typically feature mechanical wind-out mechanisms operated by a metal crank handle. Popularised in the late 19th century, these tables expand seating capacity using removable central leaves supported by telescopic wooden runners.

Craftsmen primarily constructed these tables using solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. The internal extension mechanisms relied on cast iron or steel screws, brass winding fittings, and solid wood runners.

Authentic pieces feature original mechanical screw fittings, turned or fluted legs with period castors, and hand-crafted joinery. Winding mechanisms from this era often display manufacturer stamps on the metalwork or wooden framework.

Pairing a heavy oak dining table with sleek, modern dining chairs creates a balanced contrast of textures and eras. Placing the table beneath contemporary pendant lighting highlights the timber grain while grounding the room.

Dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax every few months protects the timber surface and original finish. The mechanical winding mechanism requires occasional lubrication with light machine oil to ensure smooth operation.
