A pair of painted planters on stands. Both planters show losses to the paintwork as clearly shown on our photos. One of the sides of one of the planters is missing the heads of the figures.

The planters are supported on their original stands.

Also present are the original metal liners which are also very distressed.

That is all the negatives! They are nevertheless very attractive and would look wonderful in a conservatory or garden room.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Japanese and Chinoiserie decorative arts are defined by East Asian-inspired imagery, such as stylized figures, banana palm trees, architectural details, and decorative geometric borders, often rendered in painted or relief form.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved wood or joinery timber, finished with gesso and polychrome paint, and lined with removable zinc, tin, or galvanised iron inserts to protect the wooden framework from moisture.

Authentic period planters often feature hand-applied paint layers exhibiting natural age-related craquelure or paint loss, traditional joinery techniques, and oxidized metal liners showing historical use.

A symmetrical pair can be placed at either end of a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece to anchor a room scheme, or positioned in a sunroom containing potted greenery.

Keep the wood dry by placing plants inside plastic pots or drip trays before placing them within the metal liners, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid direct exposure to heat sources or moisture.
