Antique Edwardian Oak Side Table | Single Drawer

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 20th century Edwardian side table in oak, a simple yet beautifully proportioned piece with a timeless and elegant appearance.

Standing on four slender square legs, the table has a light, refined form that allows the natural beauty of the oak to take centre stage.

A single drawer to the lower section provides useful discreet storage and is finished by a decorative brass handle, adding a subtle touch of detail to the understated design.

Gorgeous grain and colour are displayed throughout the oak, giving the table warmth and highlighting the natural variation of the timber.

Its versatile proportions make it ideal beside a sofa or armchair, as a bedside table, or as a small feature within a hallway or living space.

In good condition, well made and of good quality, this desirable Edwardian table proves that a simple design can still have plenty of beauty and character.

This Edwardian side table is an antique furniture piece constructed from oak in a dark brown finish with brass hardware. Standing 80.5 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 31.5 cm deep, the slender English Country House design has four square legs, a single drawer with a round central knob, and an upper shelf with a scalloped apron. In a home today, this piece works well in an empty corner, beside a sofa or armchair, as a bedside table, or as a small feature within a hallway or living space to hold lamps, books, or decorative objects while providing discreet storage underneath.

FAQs

Edwardian side tables, produced between 1901 and 1910, are characterised by lighter visual proportions, straight or subtly turned legs, and functional additions such as lower shelves, drawers, or scalloped aprons.

Cabinetmakers during the Edwardian era primarily used solid oak, mahogany, and walnut, employing traditional mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-cut or early machine-cut dovetails.

Authenticity is indicated by timber wear around the base and drawer fronts, original brass or turn-knob hardware, visible joinery techniques, and natural shrinkage across wood panels over time.

Position the table in an alcove, hallway, or corner as a dedicated plant stand or display area for lighting, allowing natural wood grain to contrast against modern paint schemes.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality clear beeswax paste polish annually, keeping the wood clear of direct heat sources and high humidity.
