This nineteenth-century Grand Tour games table functions as a striking accent piece in an empty corner of a formal reception room or study. The circular top incorporates an inlaid specimen marble chessboard within a dark border, surrounded by geometric marble panels in shades of brown, ochre, grey and cream. The carved giltwood base displays a deep serpentine frieze ornamented with lion mask heads, scallop shells and foliate carving, all finished in a bright gold tone. A tripod support featuring fluted double scroll legs terminating in carved lion paw feet elevates the circular top. The table measures 75 cm high, 65.4 cm wide and 65.4 cm deep, offering a compact surface for display or occasional use.

A Grand Tour specimen marble table is a piece of furniture featuring a top inlaid with various geological samples of coloured marble, porphyry, and natural stone, collected by travellers visiting Italy and Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Specimen marble tops are crafted using pietra dura or marquetry techniques, where precisely cut, polished tiles of natural stone are set within a slate or stone matrix to form geometric patterns or chessboards.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-carved timber bases with original water or oil gilding showing natural wear, along with stone tops displaying hand-cut edges and irregular underside finishing.

A specimen marble chess table functions as a key focal point when positioned in an entryway, library alcove, or beside contemporary seating to contrast polished stone with modern upholstery.

Clean marble surfaces using a soft cloth dampened with pH-neutral water, avoiding acidic solutions, and dust gilded timber bases strictly using a dry, soft brush to protect the delicate gold leaf.
